Detox Diet Woman Gets £810,000

A woman who suffered brain damage as a result of following a special detox diet has been awarded £810,000 in compensation.

Dawn Page, 52, had been following 'The Amazing Hydration Diet', supervised by nutritional therapist, Barbara Nash. After following the regime for less than a week, Mrs Page began vomiting. She was told by Mrs Nash that this was a normal part of the detox process. Subsequently, however, she suffered a severe epileptic seizure and had to be taken to hospital.

Mrs Page was found to be suffering from low salt levels in the body. Salt-rich plasma normally provides a protective layer around the brain but, because she had very low sodium levels, water had leaked into her brain. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to prevent her suffering a permanent brain injury.

As a result, Mrs Page now suffers from a 'cognitive deficit'. This means she has problems with her memory and has difficulty speaking normally and in concentrating on routine tasks. She also suffers from mood swings. She now has to take mood-stabilising drugs and anti-epilepsy medication.

Mrs Page has been forced to give up her job as a conference organiser and is unable to drive. Her husband, Geoff, now looks after her.

The personal injury claim was brought against the nutritional therapist's insurance company.

In court, the insurance company agreed to pay Mrs Page £810,000, even though there was no admission of liability for her injuries.
